Summary

A new series about love, curses, and the lengths that people will go to for happily ever after。

Evangeline Fox was raised in her beloved father’s curiosity shop, where she grew up on legends about immortals, like the tragic Prince of Hearts。 She knows his powers are mythic, his kiss is worth dying for, and that bargains with him rarely end well。

But when Evangeline learns that the love of her life is about to marry another, she becomes desperate enough to offer the Prince of Hearts whatever he wants in exchange for his help to stop the wedding。 The prince only asks for three kisses。 But after Evangeline’s first promised kiss, she learns that the Prince of Hearts wants far more from her than she’s pledged。 And he has plans for Evangeline that will either end in the greatest happily ever after, or the most exquisite tragedy…

Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review。I can honestly say I was obsessed with this book。 I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it and never wanted to put it down。 This was such a good fantasy read!I will admit I haven’t finished the Caraval trilogy and have only read the first book, which is now something I need to change! I think I enjoyed this one more than Caraval when I read that a few years ago。 I do think this book can be read as a standalone, but I think there are some things that will probably make more sense if you’ve read the Caraval trilogy first! This book also has spoilers for that trilogy as it is set after the events of it, and some characters do feature! I also believe this is a spin off involving Jacks, the Prince of Hearts, a character that appears in the last two books of the trilogy, so he was a character I had never met before。‘I believe there are far more possibilities than happily ever after or tragedy。 Every story has the potential for infinite endings。’Once Upon A Broken Heart follows Evangeline Fox, a girl in love with Luc, a boy who is about to marry her stepsister。 Evangeline and Luc were previously in love and this marriage comes as a massive shock to Evangeline, so naturally she seeks out one of the Fates to stop the wedding。 She meets Jacks and makes a deal with him, he will stop the wedding in exchange for three kisses of his choice。 After the wedding is stopped which gains quite a bit of media attention, Evangeline is sent as an Ambassador to the Magnificent North to attend the Nocte Neverending, an event to help Prince Apollo of the North find a wife。 Evangeline doesn’t expect to see Jacks in the North, but finds herself entangled in a mysterious plan of his。I wish this was a standalone as I am desperate for the sequel! As the Prince of Hearts, Jacks can’t kiss anyone without killing them, unless they are his true love。 And I have never wanted two characters to kiss more than I wanted Evangeline and Jacks to。 Jacks is a very morally gray character, but he made the perfect love interest! Their relationship, if you could call it that, is a very very slow burn, but I think it’ll be worth the wait!‘I wanted you here, Little Fox。’Evangeline is a very well written character and I felt connected to her and her emotions。 I loved her fascination with the North and the Fates。 The world building was stunning。 I felt so immersed in this book and could perfectly imagine myself in the settings described。 It was incredibly easy to get lost in this book, and I’m sat here writing this review and wishing I was still reading this book! I have so much more I want to say about this book and what moments I loved but then this review would not be spoiler free! 。。。more

I received an eARC from the publishers through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review。 It has not affected my opinions。The best way I can describe this book is "absurdist。" There's a certain amount of suspension of disbelief required to read books, particularly SFF, but this book took it to the extreme。The sequence of events felt rather ridiculous, with things happening so fast as if the book was trying to ensure you didn't have enough time to question why things were happening。 For example, I received an eARC from the publishers through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review。 It has not affected my opinions。The best way I can describe this book is "absurdist。" There's a certain amount of suspension of disbelief required to read books, particularly SFF, but this book took it to the extreme。The sequence of events felt rather ridiculous, with things happening so fast as if the book was trying to ensure you didn't have enough time to question why things were happening。 For example, the entire plot is predicated on the fact that a random girl who'd gotten into gossip papers is sent north on a diplomatic mission, despite having no experience。 It's framed as a diplomatic mission, except there's nothing diplomatic about her task - which is just "go" as if northern royals will know about southern gossip and think that makes her a good choice? It basically feels like an excuse to start in a city we know from the previous books to get a Scarlett and Tella cameo in, and then to get Evangeline north where the plot is happening。 There is a one line explanation later, which only really generates more questions - namely why Scarlett would have listened to that person to make the decision。And the whole book felt like this。 Increasingly preposterous events with explanations that would crumble at the slightest breath of wind。 It almost felt like a farce。Having just read FINALE and being very disappointed by the book for trying to romanticise Jacks who hits every single one of my red flags for abusive, manipulative partners, I was worried this book would make him the love interest。 It didn't, thankfully - oh, for sure, Evangeline is confused, but it never felt like love from either of them。 He's using her for his own ends, and that's that。 There's no feeling of obsession from him。The "romance" itself, with Apollo, also felt off and farcical。 She's a very naïve girl who is very good at believing herself in love, and that's how I viewed it。 There wasn't any chemistry, and I'd understand if her emotion at the end was guilt and that's why she thought she had to do something。 However, it seemed like I was being told that it was love。That's two bad experiences in a row, and I doubt I'm going to enjoy reading any more of this series if it's like this。 It's always disappointing when you part ways with an author's books, but I think that's the best thing to do。 。。。more

I'll unfortunately have to conclude Stephanie Garber's books are not for me。 While reading the Caraval trilogy, it had its ups and downs for me。 I didn't like the characters or the writing style very much, but I found the world so interesting。 And Jacks was a more interesting character to me than Legend。 So I was hoping this book might have been better in terms of writing style and characters。 I ultimately didn't feel like this book added an interesting story to this world, though。 I found mysel I'll unfortunately have to conclude Stephanie Garber's books are not for me。 While reading the Caraval trilogy, it had its ups and downs for me。 I didn't like the characters or the writing style very much, but I found the world so interesting。 And Jacks was a more interesting character to me than Legend。 So I was hoping this book might have been better in terms of writing style and characters。 I ultimately didn't feel like this book added an interesting story to this world, though。 I found myself pretty bored through most of it, even though a lot happens。 So I'll have to conclude it just didn't work for me。 。。。more

Absolutely amazing and I could not recommend it more! 。。。more

The legends that were discussed in here did gave me pique of interest。 I want to know more of past stories。 Then suddenly we had a mystery story??? Way to go! Another element added hence curiousity is increasing。 But it was solved in the end。 Predicted but kinda nice small element woven in this story。 It's kinda a snack for me。 The dessert of this story is the journey of meeting Chaos。 The Vampire element so sudden exist but deliciously exist。 I also happened to love when Jacks and Evangeline started to interact and get to know each other personally。 But then in the end, something is suspicious on Jacks。 I'm immediately investing on this might-be-a-treachery 。 Plus, Evangeline yet to uncover the legends hidden for many years。 Probably it will be reveal in 2nd books which is necessary。 Hopefully the 2nd book will be focusing on the properchy mentioned and what's Evangeline's role in it。 The legends really added that spices in the book。 Plus, hoping to meet other Fates as well!Overall, it's a fast paced book, deliciously woven with vampire, mystery and fairy tales。 。。。more

The world was whimsical, though I do wish we'd gotten more descriptions of it。 There were a couple myths which were amazing, but I don't know much about the Magnificent North beyond that and that it's cold。 Also I kind of wished we had half a chapter dedicated to showing the characters travel。 This way it definitely made for a quicker paced book, but it seemed like an unusual choice to skip the travelling entirely and move on to the next scene。 Otherwise I found this book really enjoyable。 The plot picked up right from the first chapter and I couldn't put the book down。 I've read it in 2 days, which I don't remember the last time that's happened and I'm very eagerly awaiting the sequel already! 。。。more

Firstly, thanks for Hodder & Stoughton and NetGalley for a e-arc of this title。 Right off the bat, I will admit - prior to reading this book I had not finished the Caraval series。 And if you've not read it or haven't finished it - don't let that deter you from picking up this book。 It is set in the same universe, with characters that make an appearance and minor references to the previous series。 But nothing that would leave you confused or spoilt。Overall, Stephanie Garber does an amazing job at Firstly, thanks for Hodder & Stoughton and NetGalley for a e-arc of this title。 Right off the bat, I will admit - prior to reading this book I had not finished the Caraval series。 And if you've not read it or haven't finished it - don't let that deter you from picking up this book。 It is set in the same universe, with characters that make an appearance and minor references to the previous series。 But nothing that would leave you confused or spoilt。Overall, Stephanie Garber does an amazing job at creating such intricate and magical worlds。 While the Caraval series was large and boisterous, this series was more whimsical, finding the magic in the small corners of the world instead。 The recent trend of moral gray love interests shines bright in this book with a enemies to lovers slow burn romance thrown in for good measure。 Filled with mystery, prophecy and deception this book is set up for a good time。 However, I did find the book fell flat a little。 Plot elements felt predictable, the character didn't feel fully developed and the romance wasn't exciting。 This book definitely falls in the suitable for YA category but most probably won't appeal to an older audience。 But despite this, it was a fun read, something light and fluffy with fantastical elements and magic wound into the story and an entertaining read。 。。。more

It will come as no surprise to anyone that Once Upon A Broken Heart absolutely had to receive a five star rating。 Stephanie Garber is a wonderful author but she truly excelled herself with this novel。 Set in the same world as Caraval only a few short months after Finale takes place, we are introduced to the character Evangeline。 With rose gold hair and a quirky personality, she is destined to stand out。 When her beloved is cursed and she can’t find a cure, Evangeline turns to the final option; p It will come as no surprise to anyone that Once Upon A Broken Heart absolutely had to receive a five star rating。 Stephanie Garber is a wonderful author but she truly excelled herself with this novel。 Set in the same world as Caraval only a few short months after Finale takes place, we are introduced to the character Evangeline。 With rose gold hair and a quirky personality, she is destined to stand out。 When her beloved is cursed and she can’t find a cure, Evangeline turns to the final option; praying to the Fated Prince of Hearts for help。 And Jacks, being the mischievous little devil that he is, is all too willing to strike a bargain。 Evangeline really should have trusted all the warnings to never trust a Fate。 After finishing the Caraval trilogy, I was left wanting more Jacks than ever。 Being given a book devoted to him and his roguish exploits was a dream come true。 I loved that we were able to delve way deeper into his character and were introduced to parts of his past。 It was also extremely interesting to see how the events of Finale (and what happened with Donatella) influenced his decisions in OUABH。 I am so so eager for the next book because I need answers ASAP。 And more Jacks。 The world never has enough Jacks。 。。。more

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ / 5 stars Thank you to Hodder & Stoughton and NetGalley for gifting me with an e-copy of this book in exchange for an honest review! Once Upon a Broken Heart is the first in a brand-new series that takes place in the Caraval world! This time, we follow Evangeline after she strikes a deal with Jacks。 It is a story about bad decisions, broken hearts and unrequired love。 I’ve always been a huge fan of the Caraval series, so when I heard about more books in the same world, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on a copy。 Bonus: we follow one of my favourite characters! The magical atmosphere that I loved so much in the Caraval series really shown through! With the world expanding to the North there was so much room for more, and it definitely delivered! I think this might be my favourite book out of the four! I just didn’t want this story to end, and especially with the ending that was written! It left me gasping for more pages which weren’t there! Evangeline is an amazing character who I fell for from the very first page! She is kind and brave。 Her imagination and her love and believe in fairy tales are just amazing albeit a bit naïve in the beginning。 I also loved how she interacted with Jacks。 Jacks has been a favourite of mine for a long time。 I just love a good villain/morally-grey character like him。 He’s everything and more; shady, secretive, wicked and just has this vibe that makes me love him and root for him and everything! I don’t care if he’s bad, I want him to have it all haha。 The twists and turns in this story were all done so extremely well! You don’t really see the twist coming, other than that you get a feeling something is about to happen。 They left me gasping and in shock in the best ways。 I would’ve liked to see what more the story could’ve brought me as a reader if it wasn’t classed as YA but NA。 I can understand the Caraval series being YA, but Jacks feels more intense and maybe NA would suit him and the story a bit better。Overall, it was an amazing book that I enjoyed from start to finish! I can’t wait to see what more the world and the characters will bring。 。。。more
